8 Tips for Surviving Holiday Stress

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la……Ouch my back hurts!” Does this sound like you? Obligations and expectations keep us running this time of year in hopes of this year being the perfect holiday!

Our bodies respond to stress whether it is brought on by good or bad events. 10 minutes late getting ready for the party, you can’t find your best sparkly earrings…stress. Traffic at the stores and fighting a fellow shopper for a parking place…stress. Obligatorily family visits that you purposely avoided for a year…LOTS of stress. Drinking too much wine at that family gathering…MORE stress!

There is a lot of meaning in all of our family traditions this time of year that have made memories for us, help us feel grounded, and give us a sense of belonging.  Unfortunately, the need to continue “tradition” can hold us back from experiencing something new and even better.

The stress of the holidays we all experience because of “family traditions” can lead to acute body aches and pains. Most low back pain is brought on by weakness in the kidney and adrenal glands. Two major players this time of year. The kidneys are busy maintaining the body’s ph levels, and removing toxins while the adrenal glands are “running interference with handling the holiday stress.”

Chinese medicine associates the kidneys with the responsibility of storing our “Jing,” or the essence of our body. Every organ has an emotion connected to it and for kidneys it’s fear. Fear of not enough time, not having enough money, having to deal with fearful people or events, even fear of not being happy or alone. You get the point; while the holidays for some really are the most wonderful time of the year, for others, they can simply be stressful.

When fearful situations come up, either consciously or subconsciously, (because the brain is always working), your life force or “chi” drops down to your lower centers of energy in the lower abdomen, lumbar spine, and sacrum. These areas are included in your first chakra, (which is responsible for your feelings of security, safety, money and power) and your second chakra (where your inner child resides). Hmm, guess it’s no surprise a lot of us are in pain this time of year!

Your body on an unconscious level contracts muscles and back pain begins. Stress can cause an undue amount of adrenaline to be excreted from your adrenal glands–leaving you fatigued, drained, and achy. The ligaments of the body are in direct line of fire from adrenal stress and blow out relatively quickly in the form of backache and neck pain.

Neck pain related to digestion is a very common ailment this time of year as well. All the muscles that bend your head back and forth as in, “Yes, I’ll take a second piece of pecan pie” and turn your head left and right as in, “No I don’t want broccoli on my plate,” are related to the stomach meridian or the “sea of nutrients.” You can well imagine the strain that is put on the neck muscles from rich holiday meals with too much sugar, dairy, and wheat (not to mention alcohol). In addition, tension at the neck and shoulders travel along the small intestine meridian, which runs from the pinky finger up your shoulders, and to your ear along your face.

Initially stomach energy ascends while digesting food, then the energy gets sent to the spleen and lung before it travels downward to the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. If your stomach is having a difficult time assimilating the food you have eaten and the energy cannot descend downward to the small intestines, then the needed nutrients to strengthen your body, mind, and spirit will not get absorbed and you will feel an achy neck and your energy levels will feel low. Other symptoms from a weak stomach meridian may include headache, sinus issues, nausea, cold sores, bloated feeling, and stomach ulcers.

While all of this sounds dismal, I promise I have some wonderful tips for your ailments. Unfortunately, a bottle of wine is NOT included in one of the remedies!

8 Tips for Surviving Holiday Stress:

1. Use a support for your neck and back while sleeping or sitting on long drives to visit family and friends. My organic, all natural, millet therapy pillows are fantastic for these purposes and are available for purchase at http://www.selemehealth.com/collections/pillows-cases. Remember, only sleep on one pillow, never two! Sleeping on two pillows reduces your cervical curve. The great thing about my pillow is it will help reintroduce the cervical curve while you sleep and can always be molded to each individual’s needs. Not only that, but they come in a wide variety of beautiful prints and patterns. Perfect gifts for you and loved ones.

For more information about the multitude of ways you can use Dr. Seleme’s organic, therapeutic, millet pillows, click on the video below!

Dr. Seleme’s organic, therapeutic, multi-purpose millet pillows make a PRACTICAL, FANTASTIC, CUSTOMIZABLE, & BEAUTIFUL gift anyone would love!

2. Take a digestive enzyme with every meal. Your body will love you for this. It will remove the added burden of having to digest so much food by itself and unfortunately not having the vital digestive power we all need so desperately. Most of us begin to lose digestive power as we age.

3. Take a kidney or adrenal glandular supplement during the stressful period of the holidays. Many times this can quickly alleviate your back pain. This will allow your body to stand up to stressful events and help rebuild weak organs. If you are unsure of what to take, call our office and schedule a mini appointment to get your nutrient consult.

4. Use essential oils in a diffuser to create the mood you want. A mix of Lavender, Frankincense, and Orange can be calming and relaxing. Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Ylang Ylang can relieve stress and anxiety. Want a more upbeat environment? Try Lime, Lemon, and Peppermint for an energy boost. Need a diffuser and therapeutic essential oils? Stop by the office. We have plenty and would love to share the amazing uses and beauty of the oils!

5. Use a natural flower remedy called “Bach Flower Remedy” to handle whatever particular emotions come up for you this season.See the list of my recommendations below.* These can be purchased at a local health food store.

6. Take an Astralagus or Fo Ti supplement during the winter months to nourish your adrenal glands. These are well known Chinese and Ayurvedic supplements to assist your body with the extra burdens of stress, food, change in seasons, and any other difficult event.

7. BE CONSCIOUS and not on auto-pilot when you eat. Perhaps you have a small meal before the party, or in between every glass of wine you have a glass of water. Ask yourself, “Am I eating because I’m hungry, or just because it tastes good?” There are always leftovers you can have tomorrow. I have always thought food is overrated. I like to eat but “nothing tastes as good as the way that good health feels!”

8. Take reflection time to find out what really matters the most to you and your close meaningful relationships. Perhaps you make small changes this year to accommodate the way you really would like to spend this precious time. Be brave, it takes courage to change tradition, and of course, we understand we will never please everyone all the time, but that is part of our growth cycle. Above all else, be true to yourself. As the old saying goes, “When you do what’s right for you, you do what’s right for others.”

It’s never too late to create excitement and true meaning more aligned within your heart’s desire in the holiday spirit. Who knows? You may have some of the best new, holiday memories getting ready to be made just around the corner!

Happy Holidays! Namaste!

*Natural Bach Flower Remedies

can help with stressful events this time of year. Here are some of my favorites:

Impatiens for impatience, irritability and extreme mental tension.  Great for emotional back pain.

Beech for those desiring perfection and easily find fault with others. Overreact to small annoyances. Great for that relative who seems to always be complaining.

Centaury for those who are overanxious to please others, and thus are easily exploited by others. Good for caregivers who are running around taking care of everyone.

Elm for those who may experience momentary feelings of inadequacy and being overwhelmed by their responsibilities. For anyone feeling that they cannot afford to buy great gifts.

Holly used when troubled by negative feelings such as, envy, jealousy, hate, suspicion, revenge. Vexations of the heart, indicating a need for more love. Wonderful when we feel forced to spend time with people with whom we have a hard “history.”

Honeysuckle for those dwelling in the past, nostalgia, homesickness, always talking about the good old days when things were better. For those who feel the ones they love are unable to be with them for whatever reasons.

Mimulus for fear of known things such as heights, water, the dark, other people, of being alone. For people who aren’t feeling the love this season, because they can’t be with someone they love.

Olive for mental and physical exhaustion, as well as, zapped vitality with no reserve. Too much shopping, cooking, traveling etc.

Red Chestnut for those who find it difficult not to be overly concerned or anxious for others. Always fearing something wrong may happen to those for whom they care. Worrying about ill family or friends.

Star of Bethlehem for grief, trauma, and loss. Mental and emotional effects during trauma. Perhaps a loss of a job or loved one at the holidays.

Sweet Chestnut for those who feel they have reached the limits of their endurance. Moments of deep despair when the anguish seems to be unbearable. Dealing with a loss or major grief.

How Does The Vibrational Frequency of Red Roses Heal?

Red Roses

Albert Einstein taught us through E = mc 2 that all things in life emit vibrational frequencies and that all things are simply energy in different vibrational forms. Basically, this means every cell that makes up you is energy as well as all colors on the spectrum wheel, therefore the energy of colors can affect your energy. It’s really that simple! Color Therapy uses color to assist the body in using its natural healing ability to balance itself. Color supports our vital life force by supplying light frequencies to our vibrational energetic system. In ancient times Egyptians built rooms that reflected the sun’s energy with different colors of glass because they understood that color affects people in different ways.

Our eyes can change light into electricity, which travels to our central nervous system and directs all body function. Each specific color frequency gets attracted to the area of our body that recognizes that specific vibrational frequency. In turn this can cause hormonal and cellular changes to occur in our electrical system, thereby bringing the body into balance with that specific color.

All seven colors on the spectrum make up white light, but if you separate them out, each color has its own specific vibration. Colors on the spectrum vibrate at different speeds, with red vibrating the slowest and purple vibrating the fastest. Red’s slower vibration is just above heat and has the ability to stimulate our bodies physically.

The specific areas of the body related to the color red are the base of the spine, the adrenal glands, kidneys and bladder, colon, spinal column, legs, and our vital force: the blood. Red represents iron, the substance in our veins that turns our blood red. It’s also associated with the fiery planet Mars–ruler of war, passion, and lust. Red is related to our physical bodies, our ability to self-preserve, survival instincts, primal needs, feeling grounded and secure, basic instincts, physical activity and being courageous. It is also connected to the feeling of “having” things. Essentially all things related to the first chakra energy level or all things associated with the lower body region.

Dr. Robert O. Becker, in his book, “Body Electric” states that the human body has a measurable electrical frequency and the state of health in a human can be measured by his overall vibrational frequency. Generally, a healthy body will resonate between 62-78 hz. Our body’s energy can be affected by thoughts, other people, environment, even toxic-laden food. It may interest you to know on the eve of Valentine’s Day, that the red rose has the highest vibrational frequency known among all flowers, resonating at a whopping 320 hz! No wonder we use it to woo our loved ones on that special day. Doesn’t that make sense? Have you ever suddenly had your breath taken away by a gorgeous, resonating bouquet of red roses (especially if they were for you!)? Think of what you do when given a red rose. Most people snuggle their nose into the rose to breathe in the scent and vibration. It’s as if somehow we intrinsically know the power of the color red and the beautiful geometry of rose mixed together will bring us to a higher state of consciousness. Who doesn’t want to reach Nirvana in a breath of a second? Outside of smelling roses, inhaling rose essential oils or placing one drop of it on the bottom of your feet or chest on the heart point will also raise your vibration. Studies show essential oils placed on the skin enter the body within 6-21 minutes. Voila, easy vibration fix!

So this Valentine’s Day (and beyond!) enjoy the good vibrations and rebalance your energy by wearing red and smelling the high frequencies of roses and rose essential oil. Contact the office if you want to get some rose essential oil for yourself or your loved ones!

Wheat Today, Immunity Gone Tomorrow!

gluten-warning

Sick and tired of trying to figure out just what is wrong with your digestion? It may have something to do with gluten intolerance. If you eat “regular” bread and pasta, you may wonder how something so wonderful and fluffy, that tastes great with burgers and awesome as spaghetti, got such a bad wrap. I find that most patients, whether they have an official diagnosis of celiac disease or not, do not do well with the modern, over hybridized, repeated backcrossing, and chemically mutated wheat. Something many people don’t realize is that genetically modified wheat is not approved for sale in the U.S. But what is approved contains a hybridized wheat and therein lies the problem. Genetic modification refers to using genetic splicing to put in or take out a gene or a partial gene of a food. They do not do that to wheat yet; they save that for ALL the other food we unknowingly eat!! Not to worry though, research is currently working on that to create pesticide resistant strains. Yummy to my tummy. NOT! Some actually believe hybridization is even worse than genetic modification if you can imagine that.

Hybridization occurs when you cross different plant strains to create smaller, dwarf plants because the original plant contained stalks taller than the roots of the plant causing “lodging”. This is where the plant falls over due to it’s height and now rot situations take over the plant. In addition, with the smaller hybridized dwarf plants extra nitrogen can be sprayed on the plant and the weight will not cause the plant to lodge. The dwarf varieties allow more of the plants energy to be focused on the seeds resulting in a higher yield production. The problem with this becomes when new proteins are created in the offspring that are not contained in either parent plant. At least 5% of proteins generated have never been seen by our guts!

Another form of wheat manipulation is something called “backcrossing” or repetitive winnowing with different grass species to get rid of the undesirable characteristics, such as being too tall and reduced seed production. Backcrossing has drastically increased production of the hybridized dwarf plant and increased gluten levels in the plant which gives the wheat product a new and improved larger and fluffier appearance. Although this was good for the bottom line of these companies ultimately this has run havoc on the American people’s  digestive systems. This is unfortunately what research HAS NOT looked into. Don’t you think this should have been the FIRST thing they considered and not their bottom line?

There are also chemical abuses to the wheat source as well. Exposing the wheat embryo and seeds to a chemical called sodium azide, as well as to gamma and x-ray radiation, the embryo and seeds mutate. According to Dr. William Davis, M.D. from the Wheat Belly Blog, “Sodium azide is highly toxic to animals, bacteria, and humans, with human ingestion of small quantities yielding effects similar to cyanide. With accidental ingestion, for instance, the CDC recommends not performing CPR on the victim (and just letting the victim die), since it may cause the CPR-provider to be exposed, nor to dispose of any vomitus into a sink, since it can cause an explosion. (This has actually happened.)”

This is how the well known herbicide-resistant wheat species called Clearfield Wheat came into existence from the chemical company called BASF. This is called Chemical Mutagenesis although in my opinion it should be called Human Genocide. Our animal digestive system struggles so much to handle the chemicals and manipulation to our nutritional sources but even our miraculous bodies at some point give in to the onslaught of the abuse. This is why so many young and old are sick now with cancers, auto immune disease, fatigue and depression.

In short, research is turning our food industry into a modern day sci-fi horror movie by manipulating food DNA, protein, and chemistry with Frankenstein laboratory techniques, dangerous chemicals, and harmful radiation.  What it hasn’t learned though is how to heal the devastating effects it has on mother nature, our digestive system and our immunities. It’s hard to predict just how our guts will react to this “new food”. Guess they won’t look at that until we all start turning into real-life Zombies and storming the F.D.A in Washington! I am hopeful that’s not in our future. Please consider that food certainly is a drug and does affect you every bit as a prescription medication. I just wish our government would soon recognize our wealth is in our health and not in their bank accounts, our lives depend on it!

Using Essential Oils to Heal

YL essential oils

What’s all the craze lately about Essential Oils or (E.O.) you might be asking yourself?

Well if you haven’t heard by now, there are literally HUNDREDS of different applications for them. Essential oils are the aromatic liquids found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, resins, and seeds. Some people like to call essential oils “nature’s living energy” because they contain unique constituents that provide a host of benefits.

Most essential oils are extracted from plant sources using steam distillation and are highly concentrated, making them far more potent than dried botanicals.  Essential Oils are not perfumes, although they can be used like them to achieve a desired smell or response in the body. Pure E.O.’s contain no artificial, processed or synthetic chemicals. Since everything we put on the skin is absorbed by capillaries that circulate in the body, you want to be sure the E.O. you are using is free of pesticides, synthetic constituents, chemicals and any other unwanted adulterated product. There are some researchers that report essential oils are better absorbed from areas of the body with greater concentrations of sweat glands and hair follicles, such as the head, feet, hands and armpits (Battaglia, 2003). Personally, I like the application to the hands and especially the feet. It is very effective and feels great.

Two great ways to use the oils is to diffuse them into the air or apply them to your body. Diffusing oils work because when you inhale the oils the active ingredients go directly to the limbic system (area of the brain responsible for emotion) which is responsible for memory, hormones, blood pressure, breath rate, and stress levels. This explains why smell triggers physiological and psychological responses in people. Some people like to dilute the oils in a carrier oil because people can have different reaction to the “neat” or undiluted oil itself. While many people are able to use the neat version of the oil, there are still sensitive individuals such as children and animals that you definitely should dilute the oil before application.

A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute EO. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically do not cause any irritation to the skin. Don’t worry, dilution with a carrier oil will not dilute the effect of the EO and it helps prevents any waste due to excessive application. Please do not use vegetable shortening, butter, margarine or any petroleum derivatives (e.g. baby oil or mineral oil)–they should never be used as carrier oils. Some users choose to avoid olive oil as a carrier oil because of it has a strong smell. My favorites are coconut oil for its anti-inflammatory effects and jojoba oil for its skin softening properties. Below is a chart for recommendations on how to dilute.

Carrier Oil 1% 2% 5% 10%
1 tsp 1 drop 2 drops 5 drops 10 drops
1 TB 3 drops 6 drops 15 drops 30 drops
1 fl. oz. 6 drops 12 drops 30 drops 60 drops

I generally recommend 2%-5% dilution for most people.

There are so many ways to use essential oils in your daily life and health, below are some fantastic ways to begin replacing toxic chemicals in your home and life with more natural, safe and effective products. For recipes, please click here.

GOOD QUALITY ESSENTIAL OILS

I have seen some very wonderful results using Essential Oils and I know from research and experience that they are not all made alike! Most store bought oils are synthetic or adulterated and not worth your health or money. You certainly need to pick and choose carefully the quality of the oils you use on your skin as well as your loved ones. If you are interested in using Young Living Essential Oils–the brand I use, love, and trust–please email me at drseleme@drseleme.com to order and learn how to buy them.

I Want a New Drug!

Yes that’s right, I said it, a new drug! This statement is meant to be an eye-opener for all who don’t believe FOOD is a drug. Just like a drug you take that makes you feel good, bad, sluggish or energetic, food effects on your body can be immediate or take a toll on you 2-3 days later. Your body must have all the necessary components to process everything in the food you ingest. You need powerful enzymes from the mouth to break down carbohydrates, while the stomach produces acid and enzymes to break down proteins. Then there is insulin, glycogen and enzymes from the pancreas that break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins while enzymes from the small intestines are secreted to break down fat and lactose. Not to mention the regulation of alkaline-acid ph by the kidneys, the liver’s role in detoxifying the food you eat as well as producing bile for fat assimilation. The intestines require just the right mix of bacteria to digest and assimilate the by-products of the broken down food. Whew, that’s a lot! And these are just some of the functions needed for a healthy assimilation of foods. Digestion is like a fine tuned orchestra with just the right amount of coordination from the strings and percussion sections!

medicine

Food, like everything in life, is complex and contains many different components. There are literally hundreds of naturally occurring chemicals in just about every type of food you can think of. Natural chemicals exist in food to impart color, flavor, nutrition, and natural toxins for protection from predator attacks or unhealthy microbes.  We all know by now, unfortunately, there are many man-made chemicals in our food but this article will focus on some of the natural chemicals and how they may affect your body function. You might be surprised to know that many of these naturally occurring chemicals if ingested in excess amounts could be considered poisonous!

Many of these natural toxins contribute to symptoms of pain, fatigue, brain fog, and digestive upsets. Most people don’t recognize how much food contributes to how they feel minute-to-minute. Food can make or break your day by dictating what kind of mood you are in and whether you will have body pain today or not.  The best advice I can give you is the next time you have sudden shoulder pain, migraines, knee pain, low back pain, gas, bloating, feeling grouchy, sluggish, angry or anxious, PLEASE look to the meals you ate in the last 24-48 hours as a major culprit. It may be a simple change in diet that changes a chronic symptom you have suffered from for years. Here are some of the chemicals more commonly involved in typical problems that I see.

SOLANINE

Solanine is a non-protein compound containing nitrogen. It is a chemical called a glycoalkaloid. In certain vegetables, it is found in all parts of the plant, including fruit, leaves and tubers. It has pesticide properties and is one of the plants naturally occurring defenses. Solanine blocks the enzyme that allows muscles, tendons, and ligaments to return to rest after activation. It can remove calcium from the bones and deposit it in any genetically weak or injured area of the body, including joint spaces, arteries, kidney and gallbladder. Unfortunately, in many people solanine causes increase in muscle pain and tightness, morning stiffness, joint pain, inflammation, osteoarthritis flare-up, autoimmune dysfunction, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and other neurotoxic properties.

In the medieval times, the majority of nightshades were not considered edible and they were used in witchcraft and shamanism. The Romans gave them the name “nightshades” because it was put in your enemy’s drink and when the person went home that night, the shade came down and they died! Solanines are not water soluble, aren’t destroyed by cooking and cannot be broken down in the body. So think wisely before you make your loved one their next meal!

Solanine is found in all “deadly nightshades”.  Nightshade foods are potatoes including white, red, yellow and blue-skinned (not sweet potatoes or yams), tomatoes, eggplant, paprika and all peppers, excluding black pepper. This brings a new and scary meaning to “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!”  Other foods which are not nightshades but contain solanine are blueberries, apples, cherries, beets, artichoke, gogi berries, okra and ashwagandha.

LECTINS

Lectins are a type of protein found in many plant foods and can interfere with your metabolism, clump red blood cells as well as adhere to your gut epithelial tissue and break down the small intestinal lining creating further leaky gut. Damage to the absorptive intestinal fingerlike microvilli, reduces the small intestines capacity to absorb vital nutrients needed for immunity and repair. Lectins in plants exist for pest and insect protection. They can enter our blood unchanged because they are indigestible to humans. Because we don’t break down and digest lectins, often we create antibodies to them–almost assuring that our bodies are having some kind of harmful immune reaction every time we eat them.

Genetically modified foods can be especially problematic because “splicing lectins” from one plant family to another occurs frequently.  Therefore, if you know you react to a particular plant lectin and that lectin has been genetically transferred to a different plant you may become symptomatic and not even be aware as to the cause. Soaking, sprouting, fermenting and cooking will reduce the amount of lectin content in your foods, so you may consider this as a way to process foods you want to eat without much gastrointestinal distress.

Lectins are found in all dried beans including kidney, soy and peanuts, nuts, seeds, wheat, wheat germ, oats, barley, quinoa, rice, millet, buckwheat, corn, potatoes, dairy and again the “deadly nightshade” family. So beans may be more than just a magical fruit!

OXALATES

Oxalates naturally occur in plants to help get rid of additional calcium by binding to it and preventing its absorption. It can be made by the human body from Vitamin C. Which is why kidney stone formers are asked to reduce their Vitamin C intake. When too many oxalates are consumed it can combine with calcium and the body can form painful calcium-oxalate crystals which can lodge in the kidneys as stones or get deposited in any body tissue and cause pain and inflammation as well as free radical damage and depletion of glutathione, a nutrient needed for many detoxification processes.

Oxalates have the ability to bind to the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper in our intestines creating a mineral deficiency. There is a genetic tendency in some people, depending on your D.N.A., as to whether you are able to detoxify the substances that produce extra oxalates in your body. This genetic variable give you the ability to produce an increased level of oxalates even when you are not eating foods high in oxalates. Anyone with kidney or gallbladder disease, certain autoimmune conditions, or gout, should avoid these foods in high doses. My recommendation is to not use spinach or other high oxalate foods everyday in a smoothie or as a meal. Rotate or divide your meal in half with high oxalate and low oxalate foods to avoid any problems with mineral absorption or deficiency.

Oxalates are found in the Amaranthaceae family of spinach, beet tops, swiss chard, amaranth, and sorrel, rhubarb, parsley, okra, berries, kiwis, figs, grapes, cocoa, chocolate, almonds, cashews, peanuts, soy and tea. Oxalates level increase as food matures, so young fresh spinach is likely to have less oxalates. Boiling and steaming reduce the amount of oxalates as well.

Low oxalate greens are lettuce, celery, chickweed, watercress, escarole, asparagus, dandelion, and some of the cruciferous vegetables such as kale, bokchoy, collards, mustard greens, turnip tops, cabbage and arugula.

GOITROGENS

Goitrogenic basically means foods that are what I call “nasty pie” for the thyroid. In other words, they slow or block thyroid function by blocking iodine uptake. Iodine is what makes your thyroid metabolism work. Goitrogens can lead to hypothyroidism and goiters. When someone is diagnosed with a “goiter”, it means your thyroid grows more cells and is enlarged. This enlargement may be to compensate for the reduction in thyroid hormone levels. A goiter is usually felt as a soft swelling on one or both sides of the neck that is 2-5 inches in diameter.

Many goitrogenic foods are considered diet foods, so when trying to lose weight you may feel as if you are doing everything right but the pounds aren’t moving. I would suggest eating no more than 3-4 cups of these raw vegetable per week if you feel that this may be creating an issue for you. Cooking these foods at high temperatures inactivates the glucosinolate, the chemical responsible for the goitrogenic effect in foods with the exception of soy which has its own very big issues.  If you do have known thyroid problems, you may want to remove these items from your diet altogether.

Known thyroid goitrogens are cruciferous foods such as bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, radish, turnips, as well as, soy, peanuts, and canola oil.

I have said many times, “Patients would rather change their religion than change their diet”. I am writing this article to pass on information not to scare you but make it so that you can be more present, conscious and proactive in taking control of your health. Many times, the answer lies within us and not in a doctor’s office.  Pay attention to what you use to nourish your body, the quality of your life may depend on it!

Is Your Mattress Secretly Out To Kill You?

DBT-114-TOP_xlrg

Have you considered that one of the most consistent places you ever will be, for at least 8 hours every day of your life, is in your bed? You probably don’t realize this but next to your family, your bed is possibly one of the most important things in your life! Many studies now show as a society we get at least 1-2 hours less sleep than in the 1940’s. The CDC in 2009 reported nearly 9 million people take sleeping pills for insomnia, disrupted sleep, or painful sleep. Sleep problems are becoming epidemic along with the rise in illness and autoimmune disease, diabetes and toxicity.

Throughout the years, mattresses have seen a huge metamorphosis from just a regular box spring made of woods, coils and cottons to synthetic plastics, latex, elastic and foams. The evolution of new mattresses with new material means additional chemicals to be aware of. We as consumers are taught to look for mattresses that can enhance deep sleep, give our spines proper support and relieve painful pressure for 8 hours. We generally assume most mattresses are environmentally safe, but a major concern with the new and improved mattresses are fumes and chemicals that come from the synthetic material in our modern plastic world.

The top part of the mattress is meant to be supportive and comfortable.  This support layer for your spine and bones can be comprised of a core made of air, foam or innerspring unit. The comfort layer is meant to create air circulation and remove pressure from your body and is made of a combination of synthetic latex (rubber), memory viscoelastic, soy, and polyurethane foams. These synthetic materials have replaced the old steel springs and cotton used in the “old days”. In addition to these synthetic compounds, in 2006 the federal government passed a law that required mattresses to contain enough Fire Retardant to withstand a 2 foot wide blowtorch open flame for 70 seconds.

Here are some of the problems with today’s modern mattress:

Off-gassing

The use of petroleum based products are what causes off-gassing. Carcinogenic and harmful, Volatile Organic Compound (V.O.C.) are of concern like formaldehyde (a preservative), chlorofluorocarbons (blowing agents), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers/PBDEs (fire retardants). These chemicals may present a problem in people with sensitive respiratory systems or chemical sensitivities. It is quite common to see eye, nose and throat irritation, nausea, and headaches that may develop with exposure. Studies have been linked to longer-term effects like central nervous system damage, organ damage, and cancer. The fastest growing segment of the mattress industry is memory foam made from polyurethane foam and additive chemicals. Polyurethane foam is highly flammable and therefore many flame retardants are usually added to the mix.

Alignment and Pressure Support

The synthetic support from the new foam materials in latex and memory foam wears with use quicker than with cotton or natural rubber. As chiropractor I know the importance in having firm support for the neck and shoulders and the low back and hips. This requires proper pressure to hold up these body parts against gravity. The new synthetic mattress material softens with repeated use and you begin to see body indentations, impressions and dips due to the materials inability to rebound over time. The life of a new mattress is only 3-8 years compared to its old cotton counterpart of 20 years.

Fire Retardants

Fire retardants are chemicals of all sorts including, methylene chloride, heavy metals, phthalates and formaldehyde. Without having to pull out an encyclopedia of sources proving the dangers in sleeping and breathing in chemicals, I think it’s safe to say, “THIS JUST CAN’T BE GOOD!” Personally, I wouldn’t want my baby, loved one or myself breathing chemical soup all night, every night. Talk about nightmares! Mattress producers are required by law to prove to the federal government that their products can extinguish an open flame but not required to tell the consumer what materials they are using.

So by now you are saying to yourself, “What alternatives do I have?” When looking for a new mattress, I would look for one that is organic and natural. They are generally a bit more expensive but worth the cost in that the natural rubber material they use will last the 20 years you are looking for and especially because they have no out gassing or flame retardants in them. They embed their mattresses with wool (which is a natural flame retardant) therefore, no harsh chemicals are used in the making and most come with a 30 year warranty. If you are looking for a quality mattress that you don’t have to be worried about being poisoned while sleeping, here are a few references:

In Vienna, VA there is Savvy Rest Natural Beds (www.savvyrest.com); they offer a 10% discount in store to anyone who mentions Dr. Seleme. At Urban Mattress (www.urbanmattress.com), they have various discounts on their items and even sometimes a free pillow—just ask! Tell both of them Dr. Seleme sent you to receive the discount offer.  You can go to their websites to look at mattresses or go to their store in Vienna to try it out. Another great source is www.cozypure.com, although they don’t have a store in the area, you can always take a drive to their warehouse in Norfolk, VA and try out one of their natural rubber mattresses.

I believe staying informed and aware of your environmental surroundings is one of the best ways to protect you and your family from unseen chemicals and toxins in our everyday lives. If you are looking for a better way to get a safe and peaceful sleep you make want to look into these organic, natural mattresses for your bed. Here’s to getting all the comfy zzzzzz’s you deserve. See you in the morning!

Glyphosphate: The Secret Reason Wheat May Be Making You Sick & How To Detoxify From It

As a Holistic Doctor who specializes in treating the whole patient, it surprises me how many new primary complaints of my patients are related to digestion problems in the form of bloating, pain, gas and indigestion. This rivals the other common complaint of “chronic fatigue”. It makes sense to me though because when you are unable to use food to nourish and resupply the body of vital nutrients, of course, you are always tired and fatigued. When there is a constant association of fear with food, when you are always thinking about what you are going to eat, how you are going to feel in an hour or even the rest of the day simply because of one meal, it becomes utterly exhausting. Add to that the lack of nutrients actually getting to your cells and it becomes overwhelming.

A new peer-reviewed paper published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology (Vol. 6(4): 159–184 ) by Doctors Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff shows that celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome are on the rise worldwide, and that rise has taken place in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate, the herbicide in Roundup.

The Doctors researched the known effects of glyphosate along with the symptoms associated with celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome.  They identified both chemical and biological pathways where glyphosate can be the cause of these diseases.

Non-organic wheat farmers for nearly 20 years now have been routinely using glyphosate as a “crop desiccant.” It gets applied to the field 7-10 days prior to harvesting the crop to dry it down and for uniformity. If that is not bad enough, these same farmers also use RoundUp during the growing season to assist in weed control.

Roundup kills plants by interfering with a biochemical pathway involved with synthesis of amino acids, in the good bacteria in our gastrointestinal tracts. This important pathway found in our gut bacteria is vital to our intestines making enough essential amino acids as building blocks for our body.  By interfering with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, consumption of glyphosate depletes essential amino acids and predisposes humans to a host of chronic health problems. Depletion of these amino acids can contribute to obesity, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, and other neurological disorders.

When you consider Roundup is put on some of the major ingredients in all foods Americans eat, specifically corn, soybean, canola, cotton, wheat, all grain crops, rice, seeds, dried beans, peas, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, and sugar beets there is no reason to assume we aren’t all affected.

Recent studies have shown glyphosphate to be a cytochrome P450 inhibitor. This is the major detoxification pathway that the liver uses for all toxic metabolites in the body. The result of the breakdown in this pathway is toxicity and metabolic waste begin to overflow and there is no way to get relief or remove them from the body. People begin to get toxic and chronic illness appears insidiously.

You can protect yourself in 4 different ways through detoxification of your body. These principles are a requirement, not an option, for anyone interested in getting better from a chronic illness or maintaining your health.

1. Open the lymphatic vessels to help waste and release toxins
2. Support your body’s own natural detoxification pathways
3. Use antioxidants to soak up dangerous and constant free radical production
4. Chelate toxic metals out of your body

You can start by taking Epsom salt baths to open and drain the lymphatic vessels. Soaking in a tub of warm water mixed with 3 cups Epsom salt and one 16 oz. bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide for 20-30 minutes is one of my favorite methods (if you use food grade hydrogen peroxide, use only about 4 oz. in your bath). It makes you feel great and helps elimination of toxins and relaxation of muscles. It also provides oxygen to skin and other vital organs. I recommend adding my Charcoal Detoxifying Bath Salts along with the epsom salt and hydrogen peroxide to receive the extra benefits of other ingredients like charcoal, bentonite clay, and essential oils (available for purchase at the office and online).

Support your body’s natural detoxification by supplementing with N-acetyl-cysteine or N.A.C. This will help produce glutathione, a primary antioxidant and important nutrient produced in every cell of your body, especially your liver. Glutathione’s role in detoxification is paramount due to the fact it supports both major phases of detoxification in the liver. It breaks down harmful xenoestrogens, heavy metals, pesticides and fat-soluble toxins stored in adipose tissue.

The next two herbs, I personally take every single day to make sure I keep my liver open and flowing. Milk Thistle and Dandelion Leaf are two extremely valuable herbs used to strengthen your liver natural ability to detoxify. Milk Thistle helps regenerate the liver cells, promotes more glutathione production, may have anti-cancer properties, aid in gallbladder function and help decongest kidneys, spleen and veins. While Dandelion leaf can promote healthy lipid profiles, reduced insulin resistance, and suppress fat accumulation in the liver.

Small intestine are vital, since most of your immunity live here. Supplementing with an amino acid called L-glutamine aids in sealing and healing the leaky gut holes created in the small intestines. This is where harmful food toxins and proteins can cross over and get into the circulation causing autoimmunity and food allergies. Prebiotics such as arabinogalactans act as a food source for friendly microflora and the probiotic lactobacillus sporogenes, a sporulated hearty bacteria, can help re-inoculate a weak gut within hours. These products are available for purchase at the office.

Various other antioxidants used to support your body’s ability to detoxify and defend can be found in BioProtect, a product we carry in our Seleme Health Detox Kit. This is a simple yet elegant way to keep the flow of the liver and the ability of the cells to slough off even the most toxic waste. This has CoQ10, selenium, zinc, Vitamins A, E, and C—all the vital nutrients the liver uses to dump waste.

Chelation can be accomplished with the use of Spirulina, a blue-green algae or Chlorella, a green algae, which contain a nutrient called chlorophyllin, a compound which binds toxic metals in the gut. Zeolite a naturally occurring mineral, is another great way to bind and capture heavy metals.

Our office has multiple detoxification processes available for your health needs. Two times per year we conduct a 21-day group detoxification program. Our next group session begins October 18, 2015. You may want to consider joining us in our personal effort to stay clear of these very harmful toxins in our world. If you are feeling motivated enough, you don’t need to wait for our fall date. You can begin as soon as you feel ready. As I always tell my patients “healing begins today”.
