Is Your Mattress Secretly Out To Kill You?

DBT-114-TOP_xlrg

Have you considered that one of the most consistent places you ever will be, for at least 8 hours every day of your life, is in your bed? You probably don’t realize this but next to your family, your bed is possibly one of the most important things in your life! Many studies now show as a society we get at least 1-2 hours less sleep than in the 1940’s. The CDC in 2009 reported nearly 9 million people take sleeping pills for insomnia, disrupted sleep, or painful sleep. Sleep problems are becoming epidemic along with the rise in illness and autoimmune disease, diabetes and toxicity.

Throughout the years, mattresses have seen a huge metamorphosis from just a regular box spring made of woods, coils and cottons to synthetic plastics, latex, elastic and foams. The evolution of new mattresses with new material means additional chemicals to be aware of. We as consumers are taught to look for mattresses that can enhance deep sleep, give our spines proper support and relieve painful pressure for 8 hours. We generally assume most mattresses are environmentally safe, but a major concern with the new and improved mattresses are fumes and chemicals that come from the synthetic material in our modern plastic world.

The top part of the mattress is meant to be supportive and comfortable.  This support layer for your spine and bones can be comprised of a core made of air, foam or innerspring unit. The comfort layer is meant to create air circulation and remove pressure from your body and is made of a combination of synthetic latex (rubber), memory viscoelastic, soy, and polyurethane foams. These synthetic materials have replaced the old steel springs and cotton used in the “old days”. In addition to these synthetic compounds, in 2006 the federal government passed a law that required mattresses to contain enough Fire Retardant to withstand a 2 foot wide blowtorch open flame for 70 seconds.

Here are some of the problems with today’s modern mattress:

Off-gassing

The use of petroleum based products are what causes off-gassing. Carcinogenic and harmful, Volatile Organic Compound (V.O.C.) are of concern like formaldehyde (a preservative), chlorofluorocarbons (blowing agents), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers/PBDEs (fire retardants). These chemicals may present a problem in people with sensitive respiratory systems or chemical sensitivities. It is quite common to see eye, nose and throat irritation, nausea, and headaches that may develop with exposure. Studies have been linked to longer-term effects like central nervous system damage, organ damage, and cancer. The fastest growing segment of the mattress industry is memory foam made from polyurethane foam and additive chemicals. Polyurethane foam is highly flammable and therefore many flame retardants are usually added to the mix.

Alignment and Pressure Support

The synthetic support from the new foam materials in latex and memory foam wears with use quicker than with cotton or natural rubber. As chiropractor I know the importance in having firm support for the neck and shoulders and the low back and hips. This requires proper pressure to hold up these body parts against gravity. The new synthetic mattress material softens with repeated use and you begin to see body indentations, impressions and dips due to the materials inability to rebound over time. The life of a new mattress is only 3-8 years compared to its old cotton counterpart of 20 years.

Fire Retardants

Fire retardants are chemicals of all sorts including, methylene chloride, heavy metals, phthalates and formaldehyde. Without having to pull out an encyclopedia of sources proving the dangers in sleeping and breathing in chemicals, I think it’s safe to say, “THIS JUST CAN’T BE GOOD!” Personally, I wouldn’t want my baby, loved one or myself breathing chemical soup all night, every night. Talk about nightmares! Mattress producers are required by law to prove to the federal government that their products can extinguish an open flame but not required to tell the consumer what materials they are using.

So by now you are saying to yourself, “What alternatives do I have?” When looking for a new mattress, I would look for one that is organic and natural. They are generally a bit more expensive but worth the cost in that the natural rubber material they use will last the 20 years you are looking for and especially because they have no out gassing or flame retardants in them. They embed their mattresses with wool (which is a natural flame retardant) therefore, no harsh chemicals are used in the making and most come with a 30 year warranty. If you are looking for a quality mattress that you don’t have to be worried about being poisoned while sleeping, here are a few references:

In Vienna, VA there is Savvy Rest Natural Beds (www.savvyrest.com); they offer a 10% discount in store to anyone who mentions Dr. Seleme. At Urban Mattress (www.urbanmattress.com), they have various discounts on their items and even sometimes a free pillow—just ask! Tell both of them Dr. Seleme sent you to receive the discount offer.  You can go to their websites to look at mattresses or go to their store in Vienna to try it out. Another great source is www.cozypure.com, although they don’t have a store in the area, you can always take a drive to their warehouse in Norfolk, VA and try out one of their natural rubber mattresses.

I believe staying informed and aware of your environmental surroundings is one of the best ways to protect you and your family from unseen chemicals and toxins in our everyday lives. If you are looking for a better way to get a safe and peaceful sleep you make want to look into these organic, natural mattresses for your bed. Here’s to getting all the comfy zzzzzz’s you deserve. See you in the morning!

Glyphosphate: The Secret Reason Wheat May Be Making You Sick & How To Detoxify From It

As a Holistic Doctor who specializes in treating the whole patient, it surprises me how many new primary complaints of my patients are related to digestion problems in the form of bloating, pain, gas and indigestion. This rivals the other common complaint of “chronic fatigue”. It makes sense to me though because when you are unable to use food to nourish and resupply the body of vital nutrients, of course, you are always tired and fatigued. When there is a constant association of fear with food, when you are always thinking about what you are going to eat, how you are going to feel in an hour or even the rest of the day simply because of one meal, it becomes utterly exhausting. Add to that the lack of nutrients actually getting to your cells and it becomes overwhelming.

A new peer-reviewed paper published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology (Vol. 6(4): 159–184 ) by Doctors Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff shows that celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome are on the rise worldwide, and that rise has taken place in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate, the herbicide in Roundup.

The Doctors researched the known effects of glyphosate along with the symptoms associated with celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome.  They identified both chemical and biological pathways where glyphosate can be the cause of these diseases.

Non-organic wheat farmers for nearly 20 years now have been routinely using glyphosate as a “crop desiccant.” It gets applied to the field 7-10 days prior to harvesting the crop to dry it down and for uniformity. If that is not bad enough, these same farmers also use RoundUp during the growing season to assist in weed control.

Roundup kills plants by interfering with a biochemical pathway involved with synthesis of amino acids, in the good bacteria in our gastrointestinal tracts. This important pathway found in our gut bacteria is vital to our intestines making enough essential amino acids as building blocks for our body.  By interfering with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, consumption of glyphosate depletes essential amino acids and predisposes humans to a host of chronic health problems. Depletion of these amino acids can contribute to obesity, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, and other neurological disorders.

When you consider Roundup is put on some of the major ingredients in all foods Americans eat, specifically corn, soybean, canola, cotton, wheat, all grain crops, rice, seeds, dried beans, peas, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, and sugar beets there is no reason to assume we aren’t all affected.

Recent studies have shown glyphosphate to be a cytochrome P450 inhibitor. This is the major detoxification pathway that the liver uses for all toxic metabolites in the body. The result of the breakdown in this pathway is toxicity and metabolic waste begin to overflow and there is no way to get relief or remove them from the body. People begin to get toxic and chronic illness appears insidiously.

You can protect yourself in 4 different ways through detoxification of your body. These principles are a requirement, not an option, for anyone interested in getting better from a chronic illness or maintaining your health.

1. Open the lymphatic vessels to help waste and release toxins
2. Support your body’s own natural detoxification pathways
3. Use antioxidants to soak up dangerous and constant free radical production
4. Chelate toxic metals out of your body

You can start by taking Epsom salt baths to open and drain the lymphatic vessels. Soaking in a tub of warm water mixed with 3 cups Epsom salt and one 16 oz. bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide for 20-30 minutes is one of my favorite methods (if you use food grade hydrogen peroxide, use only about 4 oz. in your bath). It makes you feel great and helps elimination of toxins and relaxation of muscles. It also provides oxygen to skin and other vital organs. I recommend adding my Charcoal Detoxifying Bath Salts along with the epsom salt and hydrogen peroxide to receive the extra benefits of other ingredients like charcoal, bentonite clay, and essential oils (available for purchase at the office and online).

Support your body’s natural detoxification by supplementing with N-acetyl-cysteine or N.A.C. This will help produce glutathione, a primary antioxidant and important nutrient produced in every cell of your body, especially your liver. Glutathione’s role in detoxification is paramount due to the fact it supports both major phases of detoxification in the liver. It breaks down harmful xenoestrogens, heavy metals, pesticides and fat-soluble toxins stored in adipose tissue.

The next two herbs, I personally take every single day to make sure I keep my liver open and flowing. Milk Thistle and Dandelion Leaf are two extremely valuable herbs used to strengthen your liver natural ability to detoxify. Milk Thistle helps regenerate the liver cells, promotes more glutathione production, may have anti-cancer properties, aid in gallbladder function and help decongest kidneys, spleen and veins. While Dandelion leaf can promote healthy lipid profiles, reduced insulin resistance, and suppress fat accumulation in the liver.

Small intestine are vital, since most of your immunity live here. Supplementing with an amino acid called L-glutamine aids in sealing and healing the leaky gut holes created in the small intestines. This is where harmful food toxins and proteins can cross over and get into the circulation causing autoimmunity and food allergies. Prebiotics such as arabinogalactans act as a food source for friendly microflora and the probiotic lactobacillus sporogenes, a sporulated hearty bacteria, can help re-inoculate a weak gut within hours. These products are available for purchase at the office.

Various other antioxidants used to support your body’s ability to detoxify and defend can be found in BioProtect, a product we carry in our Seleme Health Detox Kit. This is a simple yet elegant way to keep the flow of the liver and the ability of the cells to slough off even the most toxic waste. This has CoQ10, selenium, zinc, Vitamins A, E, and C—all the vital nutrients the liver uses to dump waste.

Chelation can be accomplished with the use of Spirulina, a blue-green algae or Chlorella, a green algae, which contain a nutrient called chlorophyllin, a compound which binds toxic metals in the gut. Zeolite a naturally occurring mineral, is another great way to bind and capture heavy metals.

Our office has multiple detoxification processes available for your health needs. Two times per year we conduct a 21-day group detoxification program. Our next group session begins October 18, 2015. You may want to consider joining us in our personal effort to stay clear of these very harmful toxins in our world. If you are feeling motivated enough, you don’t need to wait for our fall date. You can begin as soon as you feel ready. As I always tell my patients “healing begins today”.

10 Things To Do For An Easier Detox

Hand with Pen Writing a Diet Plan by Supermarket Fruit

Experience has shown me…

that with patients who begin any new detox or lifestyle change, not being prepared is the number one reason people fail to accomplish their goal.  You have a better chance of succeeding when you anticipate potential problems and prevent them from happening by creating conditions that support you in reaching your goal. So, what can you do, you ask?  Well, below are 10 helpful things you can do to begin preparing your body to detox.  Begin the process of a lifestyle change NOW for a smoother detox and healthier you!  And remember, my 3-week Online Detox Program begins February 16th , 2016.  Register now for additional support in achieving your goals!

10 Things To Do For An Easier Detox

1. Take time to get rid of sugary sodas and cookies, plasticized pre-packaged foods, chemically laden meats or cheeses and breads. Get rid of anything that might tempt you to fail sticking to your cleansing period plan.2. Begin to buy organic food at the grocery store, health food store or farmer’s market. If you’re not able to buy all produce organic, buy and use a natural fruit and vegetable wash to help clean your produce of pesticide residues, waxes, and other undesirable chemicals.  For some DIY options, read my article on fruit & veggie washing.3. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, begin to reduce your coffee intake by 1/4 cup each day.  This will help you to avoid a caffeine withdrawal headache.  Once you’ve worked your way to no coffee at all, you may consider substituting the following as a good replacement for coffee: dandelion tea, chocolate pu-erh tea, green tea and warm water with lemon.4. Begin to monitor you water intake. To figure out your ideal daily water intake level, take the number of your weight and divide it by 2.   This is the number of ounces of water you need to drink per day.  Many people like to keep a reusable water bottle with them throughout the day to aid in remembering and monitoring water intake.

5. Before showering, exfoliate your skin with a dry brush starting at your feet and arms and finishing toward your heart.  This will prompt lymphatic drainage and support circulation.

6. Take detoxifying hydrotherapy showers. Begin by taking a very hot shower for five minutes. Allow water to run over your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

7. Eat a vegetable-only salad for one meal per day. You choose the meal. Use only lemon/lime and olive oil for dressing. Avoid dressing with soy oil and sugar.

8. Start to reduce your consumption of fatty, hormone and antibiotic-laden animal meat by consuming only 1 meal per day with lean animal protein. You can do without the meat by replacing it with dishes featuring plant-based protein such as beans, lentils, amaranth, hemp seed, and quinoa. Combining nuts with grains, grains with legumes, and nuts with legumes in dishes will also form a complete protein (e.g. rice and beans, pita bread and hummus, corn tortilla chips and bean dip, a nut butter and whole grain bread/crackers, pasta with beans, etc.).  While soy is known to be a good source for plant protein, I am personally, not a fan of it for many different reasons (which can be its own article)!

9. Start to sweat in a Far-Infrared Sauna 30 min twice/week (call our office to schedule your sweat sessions!).  This will help you naturally expel toxins from your body. For more details on its benefits, click here!

10. Don’t forget the health of your mind and emotions!  Begin to make a gratitude list. Sit in a quiet place and focus on putting aside any worry, anger or resentment.

Think of all the things you are proud of yourself for and all the people and situations that have made you the person you are. Even if there are situations that ended badly. What important lesson did you get from that? How did that make you stronger? Focus especially on the seemingly little things. They can be the most important. “I’m thankful I have a big heart”, “I know how to forgive”, “I am strong”, “I have a resilient body.” A little gratitude and positive energy goes a long way. You would be surprised.

Pucker up and enjoy lemon water’s alkalizing benefits.

10-Reason-why-you-should-drink-lemon-water-1

In preparation for the kick off of my February 16, 3-week Detoxification Program, I have begun my daily routine of drinking the juice of 1 lemon wedge in an 8 oz glass of filtered water. In fact, if you drink lemon water throughout the day you will find that daily elimination becomes much more regular as you begin to clear the liver and the gallbladder with the alkalizing effects of lemon juice. Alkaline is the preferred state for your body as disease and illness can only thrive and exist in an acid state.

woman_drinking_lemon_waterRegular intake of lemon juice can take care of constipation problems, by increasing peristalsis and clearing the toxins that have accumulated in the bowels. Most would believe lemons make your body more acidic based on the taste but the truth is you become more alkaline with the digestion of lemons. The metabolic by-product of digested lemon creates an alkaline ash in your body which causes the blood to become more alkaline. Lemons contain a vitamin most have never heard of. Vitamin P, which stands for bioflavonoids. These water soluble plant substances, improves capillary strength, lowers blood pressure and contains systemic anti-inflammatory properties.

Lemon is also a helpful stimulant for the liver as it helps to absorb toxins and dissolve uric acid while thinning and producing more bile. It can aid in digestion relieving belching and indigestion. Another side effect of sipping lemon water throughout the day is weight loss. Many added pounds are due to the increase burden of toxins that reside in our bodies as we age. This can make you bloated, fat and just plain miserable!

To reduce the amount of sugar, sodium and fat on salads and vegetables, use fresh squeezed lemon as a dressing. Just squeeze on your salad to give it an incredible boost in flavor and nutrients. Add fresh olive oil if preferred. In fact, I recommend only using fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice and olive oil as dressing during our detox programs.

FN_Ice-Cube-Tray-Lemon-Juice_s4x3.jpg.rend.snigalleryslideAnother great idea is to squeeze fresh, organic lemons into an ice cube tray and save. Melt in a glass of warm, filtered water anytime you want to give your body an alkalizing lift. As a reminder, do not add sweeteners like honey or sugar. This will reduce the alkalizing effects of lemon greatly.

When adding lemon juice to your diet always remember to go organic or go home! In addition, fresh is always best! So pucker up, enjoy, and feel better!

Dandelions aren’t weeds!

I was out for a long walk the other day and was amazed at all the beautiful flowers and trees blooming but the one blooming flower I noticed the most was the Dandelion. Knowing all the incredible healing and medicinal properties this plant has I began to pick the roots, leaves and the bright yellow flower that this little beauty is known for. I know my fellow hikers and bikers who passed by must have thought I was crazy but if they knew what I knew about this delectable little herb they would never use one more pesticide in their lawn again. They shouldn’t be doing that anyway but that’s another blog! When you think of the Dandelion it really is considered the “Rodney Dangerfield” of the plants in that it gets “no respect”.  Many have often thought of it as a “weed” but the truth is that mother nature makes no mistakes and this is certainly true of this plant. The name dandelion comes from the French “Dente de Lyon” or “Lion’s tooth”,  named because of their jagged tooth-like appearance on the green leaves.

The  little Dandelion’s nutritional value is very high in vitamins A and C, with more beta carotine than carrots and more potassium than broccoli  or spinach, not to mention healthy doses of iron and copper for good measure.  Vitamin A is an important fat-soluble vitamin and anti-oxidant, required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and vision. The herb is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure and makes an excellent natural diuretic. Iron is essential for red blood cell production. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Additionally, it is  a good source of Vitamin B, and zinc. Medicinally, Dandelions are considered very safe and effective as a general tonic that helps strengthen the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, stomach, and intestines,  improving bile flow and reducing inflammation in cases of hepatitis and cirrhosis.  Dandelions also help to dissipate gallstones and are believed to improve kidney function, thereby improving overall health and clearing skin problems. I have often used dandelion herb to break a fever and quicken my bodies ability to fight acute infection. Dandelion is one of the richest herbal sources of vitamin K. Vitamin-K has a potential role in bone mass building and in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease patients by reducing damage to the neurons in the brain.

Did you know that Native Americans use to boil the herb to make a tea to treat kidney disease and inflammation and that Chinese physicians use dandelion to treat digestive disorders and appendicitis? It always amazes me to learn about century old herbal remedies that are in our own backyard that most times are better and safer than any pharmaceutical drug out there!

Here is a great tip for addicted coffee lovers looking for a replacement beverage with a much healthier twist. Dandelion coffee is fantastic to help clear the liver and gallbladder rather than congest it like coffee does. The best way to do this is dig up the roots of a dandelion plant. Be sure to harvest the roots from a dandelion plant that has not been near a road way, so its free of pollution and one that has no pesticides or fertilizer on it. Look for large healthy leaves because this will tell you how big the root is. Pull the leaves off to use in salad or saute with garlic and onions to be served with dinner, pull the heads of the dandelion off and toss into your fresh garden salad or use for dandelion blossom tea.

To make dandelion coffee:

  • Remove the roots from the rest of the plant.
  • Wash the roots thoroughly several times to ensure all dirt is removed.
  • Cut the roots into very small pieces and spread on a baking sheet.
  • Dry the roots in a 150° oven with the door slightly ajar (to allow moisture to escape).
  • Roast the dry roots in a 350° oven, stirring frequently until mildly brown and fragrant.
  • Grind the roasted roots in a coffee grinder.
  • Use 1 teaspoon to brew 1 8 oz. cup of “coffee” .

To make dandelion blossom tea:

  • Pick a handful of dandelions and remove the flower heads from the green parts.
  • Rinse lightly with cool water to remove debris and dirt.
  • Put a few flowers into a mug and add boiling water.
  • Steep approximately 15 minutes or to taste. You can drink plain or add sweetener with honey, agave or stevia.

One thing I love to do with the dandi’s is put them in my dehydrator so that I can make my own dandelion tea or dried leaves to sprinkle in salads, smoothies or sandwiches. You can use them for your kids and loved ones to get their bodies to begin to cleanse without them ever needing to know. Sweet! Below is a picture of my freshly picked dandelions in the dehydrator just after I got back from my walk. I left them to dehydrate for 8 hours then put them in a closed container and sprinkly them on just about everything. My supply is already running low, need another session of weed picking. Thank God for weeds!!

No More Survival of the Fittest – It’s Survival of the Most Detoxed!

Our Liver, Kidneys And The Colon – Which Are “The Sewer System” Of The Body – All Require Periodic Cleaning Just Like Your Teeth, Your House And Your Car.

Your amazing body does countless functions to keep you going. With every second, eight million blood cells die off and another eight million are made. Each day your kidneys filter about two hundred quarts of blood. That’s seventy-three thousand quarts of blood per year! Your heart pumps more than one-hundred thousand times per day, thirty-seven million beats per year. But does it ever take a break or a vacation? Never! Somewhere below, your liver is busy performing five-hundred different functions to detoxify so that it does not overload with waste or poisons and die.

What Is Detoxification?
Your body has its own natural methods of cleansing itself in order to rid the organs, blood and tissues of any by-products of metabolic breakdown and toxicity. When the poisons inside you have been purged, degeneration is arrested. In this way, harmful germs and infectious pathogens cannot attack your bodies’ systems. Your body’s natural healing mechanisms repair and restore optimum health.

So Why Do You Need To Detoxify?
We’re living in a world that contains more man-made chemicals than at any time in history. Food, air and water contain pesticides, chemicals, residual industrial waste, petroleum discharges, antibiotics and xenoestrogens. If you wish to live a long and healthy life, you need to protect your own body and periodically detoxify. Try to stay ahead of the “retoxification” process that your body systematically does on a daily basis.

When Is The Best Time For You To Detoxify?
It’s best to cleanse your body twice a year. The best times to do it is during spring and fall. Spring is a high liver season, and a great opportunity for the beginning of cleansing. Fall is a high spleen season, and it is an excellent time to strengthen your immunity.

If You Experience One Or More Of The Following, THEN IT’S TIME TO DETOX!!
Flatulence – Gas – Bloating – Excess Weight – Joint Aches and Pains – Impaired Digestion – Irritability – Mood Swings – Bad Breath – Foul-Smelling Stools – Frequent Fatigue – Low Energy – Recurring Headaches – Constipation – Protruding Belly (Pooch) – Powerful Food Cravings – Skin Problems – Metallic Taste in Mouth
