What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese term derived from two words: “rei” meaning “universal,” and “ki” which means “life force” or “vital energy.”  It is the name for a spiritual practice and “laying on of hands” energy healing system developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922.  Today, Reiki is known across the world as a natural, non-invasive, alternative healing modality.  It is commonly used in conjunction with other therapies.

How does Reiki work?
Reiki is a system of healing that intends to put the body in its optimal state of deep relaxation to encourage its own healing.  Specialized training and attunements to the Reiki energy levels sensitizes the practitioner to the different energies in the subtle bodies, allowing him/her to feel and identify the blockages and their correlating imbalances in various dimensions in one’s life.  Through practice and training, a practitioner can channel Reiki energy through the practitioner’s body and hands into another person’s body or energy field.  Channelling Reiki clears blockages and corrects imbalances in the energy centers and pathways, also known as chakras and nadis.

The mind, spirit, and body are connected and reflect the state of each other, so when Reiki helps heal one dimension of the body, it inevitably heals the others connected to it.  Reiki ultimately unites, balances, and improves the functioning of all the body’s systems: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

What happens during and after a Reiki session?
Any issues that are desired to be addressed during the Reiki session will be discussed prior to treatment.  Clients are fully clothed and may sit in a chair or lie down on a massage table with his/her eyes closed for a Reiki session.  The only thing clients are asked to do during a treatment is to relax and to try and pay attention to their experiences on a physical, mental, and emotional level (this will help with feedback at the end of the treatment).

The practitioner will then place her hands above the client’s body to scan for areas that may need healing.  Afterward, starting from head to toe, she will channel Reiki energy to all of these areas and to the main energy centers with her hands above or lightly touching the body.

Because we are all in an ever-changing state of being from moment to moment, everyone’s experience during and after a Reiki session will be unique.  During a session, most people report feeling very relaxed and even tingly; some see colors, images, or scenes like in a dream; some have major spiritual experiences; release blocked emotions and pain during or after the session; and others feel the effects in a few days.  After a session, many report feeling very calm, refreshed, clear-minded, and alert.  It is also common to experience pain relief as well as personal insight into one’s life or health.  In any case, Reiki always flows to where it is needed and is absorbed to the amount that is capable by each individual.

As with any detoxifying practice (e.g. fasts and cleanses; alkalizing, raw or nutrient-dense diets; exercising; yoga; etc.), some individuals may or may not experience detoxification symptoms, which result in feeling worse before feeling better.  Should you experience this, rest assured that it will pass within a day or two.  Continue on your healing journey by resting, staying hydrated, and only doing low impact activities as much as possible especially in the first day or two after a Reiki session.  Do your best to make positive lifestyle choices (including choosing positive thoughts and emotions); the more that are made, the more intense and increased the benefits of Reiki will be.  If you have any questions or concerns about any detoxification symptoms, please feel free to ask or talk to Emily about it.


Is Reiki safe for everyone?
Yes, because it is non-invasive and only the pure Reiki energy is channelled to the receiver, not the practitioner’s personal energy.  The only time one should potentially avoid a Reiki session is if one has improperly set broken bones because Reiki can quicken the healing or setting of the bones.

Note that while many people have been able to cure themselves of all kinds of ailments from receiving Reiki treatment, Reiki practitioners can never claim to heal you or your condition; it is up to you and your choice to allow yourself to heal.  Reiki is simply a catalyst, and the practitioner a facilitator, for healing.  Just as any other form of therapy or medicine can increase one’s state of health, without changing the root cause of an issue (i.e. unhealthy lifestyle habits including negative thoughts and emotions), the issue will persist.

How many Reiki treatments do I need for optimum health?

The number of treatments needed will vary depending on each individual’s state of being; private consultation will help determine session frequency.  Generally, those suffering from chronic pain or severe health issues will most likely need more frequent or regular treatments than more healthy individuals.  However, Reiki is still recommended for relatively healthy persons in order to maintain an optimal state of well-being.  Consider purchasing a package of 5 Reiki sessions to increase your health and savings!
